Coating for Anodes and Cathodes - CSIR

Coating for Anodes and Cathodes - CSIR
I have seen this technology in the CSIR Technofest 2010, showcased by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi, at India International Trade Fair during November 14-27, 2010 New Delhi, India. I came to know that "Coating for Anodes and Cathodes" was developed by Central Electro Chemicals Research Institute (CECRI), Karaikudi,  under the aegis of CSIR, New Delhi

Nearly seventeen lakh tonnes of caustic soda is produced annually in India. Membrane cell process is economically most viable.  Membrane cells account for around twelve lakh tonnes. Anodes and cathodes are vital components of Membrane cells. They have electrocatalytic, energy conserving and long lasting coating.   Manufacturers depend on imported one when they worn out and they will be sent to the foreign supplier for recoating.  This is the real problem from manufacturer side.  CECRI Solved this technological problem.

CECRI has developed coating technology for Anodes and Cathodes of Chlor-Alkali Membrane cells. Technology for coating and recoating of anodes and cathodes of chlor - alkali membrane cells was licensed to M/S Grasim Industries Limited (Chemical Division), Nagda of Aditya Birla Group in June 2004. Grasim used this technology for recoating 1100 Anodes and 1100 Cathodes (3.5 m2 each) of their Imported UHDENORA Chlor- Alkali Membrane cells, which produce 1 Lakh Tonne caustic soda per Annum. Hither to, electrodes had to be sent to the foreign supplier for recoating.
Grasim saved Rs 11 crores worth foreign exchange on the cost of recoating, at the rate of Rs 0.5 Lakh per electrode. Grasim is at present recoating imported anodes and cathodes of the chlor – Alkali membrane cells of its sister organizations.  Rs.5.5 crore for coating their anode pans and Rs. 5.5 crore for coating their cathode pans on the cost of recoating, at the rate of Rs. 0.5 lakh per electrode.  In five years they have achieved an energy saving of Rs.50 crores on the cathode coating alone.
