When temperature is beyond 1200℃, pure molybdenum will completely recrystallizate quickly. To improve the property, engineers added other elements to molybdenum to increase the recrystallization temperature. What Is The Element Molybdenum Used For?

Molybdenum is from the Greek word molybdos meaning "lead like." It is directly mined and is a byproduct of copper mining. It was used very infrequently up until the 19th century when Schneider and Co decided to use Molybdenum as an alloying agent in steel. Today there are many uses of molybdenum.

Molybdenum is still used as an alloy agent in steel. All high strength steel contains from .25% to 8% molybdenum which contributes to the hardenability of the steel. It also improves the strength of steel under high temperatures and improves resistance to corrosion.


Its uses are actually more in-depth than one might think. You'll find it commonly used within the power industry, chemical processing industry, water industry, and wastewater industry. Zirconium alloys are used in space vehicle parts for their resistance to heat, an important quality given the extreme heat associated with atmospheric reentry. Zirconium is also a component in some abrasives, such as grinding wheels and sandpaper. Zirconium is used in weapons such as the BLU-97/B Combined Effects Bomb for incendiary effect. Zirconium in the oxidized form is also used in dentistry for crowning of the teeth because of its biocompatibility, strength and appearance.

A major use of zirconium is for structural material in nuclear reactor cores. Because of its low thermal neutron absorption cross-section and good strength, Zirconium is ideal in this application. The thermal neutron absorption cross-section is the ability of a material to absorb thermal neutrons. The lower the thermal neutron absorption, the greater the efficiency of a nuclear reactor. In this application, reactor grade (low hafnium) material must be used. Tantalum Ore is a natural mineral formation containing tantalum which is mostly used in the production of electronic components.
