Metal stamping process using a wire preform


Metal parts can be economically fabricated by a metal stamping that comprises preforming a piece of wire to have a shape corresponding to the 2-dimensional configuration of a desired product workpiece, flattening the wire to form a metal blank, and subjecting the metal blank to metal stamping to obtain the desired product workpiece. The process can significantly reduce the amount of scrap material and thereby reduce manufacturing costs.

Metal parts are fabricated by a variety processes such as casting, die casting, and forging. One of the more common processes used for manufacturing metal parts is called metal stamping, which has been in use for over 150 years. Metal stamping,which in general involves taking a flat metal sheet and converting into a shaped article (i.e., a metal part) using a die and press, is a cost-effective process because it permits metal parts to be manufactured at high production rates.

In a conventional metal stamping process, a sheet of metal stock material, such as aluminum, copper, zinc, steel, stainless steel, nickel, titanium, or the like, is introduced into a stamping press such as a mechanical or hydraulic stampingpress. The stamping press has a die means and a punch means which together are used to form blanks from the initial sheet of stock material. These blanks are then subjected to further stamping procedures to form metal parts.

A disadvantage of conventional metal stamping processes is that the formation of the blanks from the initial sheet of stock material and the subsequent further processing of the blanks into metal parts can result in generation of excessiveamounts of scrap material, thereby adding to the cost of manufacture due to both loss of material and cost of waste disposal.

After the preforming stage, the shaped wire or preform is then subjected to a flattening process to achieve a "blank" from which the desired product workpiece will be obtained via a stamping process. The term "wire" as used herein is not to belimited to wires having circular cross sections. Wires of other cross sections such as square, rectangular, etc can also be used. Further, the effective diameter of the wire can vary widely depending on the desired thickness of the metal part and theflattening process. The wire can be flattened by any typical process suitable for applying the requisite pressure to a piece of metal. For example, a shaped section of wire having an effective or nominal diameter of, for example, 3 to 50 mm, preferably5 to 20 mm, can be flattened to a preformed piece of metal having a thickness of, for example, 1 to 30 mm, such as 1 to 25 mm or 8 to 30 mm, preferably 2 to 8 mm, by passage through a mechanical or hydraulic press that applies a pressure of, for example,60 to 1000 tons, preferably 100 to 600 tons. The dimensions and tonnage listed above are merely provided as examples and are not intended to limit the invention.


Thus, the width and thickness of the blank are determined by the selection of the nominal diameter of the wire and the amount of pressure imposed during the flattening process. The length of the blank is determined primarily by the performingstage, by selecting the length of the wire and it's perform shape prior to the flattening step, although the flattening step will also influence the overall length of the blank.

This procedure, in which the blank is made from a flattened preformed wire, results in considerable savings in material costs as the blank obtained from the flattened preformed wire requires far less material than a conventional blank obtainedfrom a metal sheet. In other words, in a conventional procedure blanks are cut and formed from a sheet of flat rolled metal. This procedure inherently imposes material costs due to the resultant scrap material. Yet, in the process according to theinvention, the blank is formed with little or no material loss.

After the preform is converted into a blank, the blank can then be subjected to one or more further conventional metal stamping procedures. In such procedures, the blank can, for example, be "stamped" in a die and press arrangement such as in amechanical or hydraulic press whereby excess material is trimmed from the blank to form a desired product workpiece, either a final product or an intermediate thereof. Stainless steels are commonly divided into five groups, depending on the specific amounts of alloying elements, which control the microstructure of the alloy, Austenitic, Martensitic, Duplex, Ferritic and Precipitation Hardening.

Austenitic Steel: This steel is called austenitic because it is made from austenitizing elements. Martensitic Steel: This steel is called martensitic as it contains essentially alloys of chromium and carbon that possess a distorted body-centered tetragonal crystal structure (martensitic) in the hardened condition. Chromium content is generally in the range of 10.5 to 18%, and carbon content may exceed 1.2%. The chromium and carbon contents are balanced to ensure a martensitic structure after hardening. Elements such as niobium, silicon, tungsten, and vanadium may be added to modify the tempering response after hardening. Biomechanical Analysis of Usain Bolts 9.58 sec World Record


At the IAAF World Championships in Berlin, the German IAAF Member Federation, DLV, in cooperation with the IAAF is carrying out a major Biomechanics Project.

The project presented the reaction times and splits for all the finalists from the 100 metersemifinals and the final at the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Berlin.
We thought we would present them here and try to predict just how fast Usain Bolt can run.
This table gives us some real insight into Bolt's race. Lets take a look at some crucial points in the race. You can click on the table to see the details.

Of the 8 finalists Bolt has the 3rd slowest reaction time to the gun, at 0.146 seconds. Both Asafa Powell with 0.134 secs and Tyson Gay with 0.144 secs react faster.
By the 20 meter mark though Bolt has caught up all this time and gone ahead of Powell by 0.03 secs.
From the 20 meter mark on, Bolt is away and getting further away over each 20 meter interval. Although we can also see that Tyson Gay is able to hang pretty close between 20 and 80 meters.
Bolt reaches his top speed of 12.27 m/s or 27.45 miles per hour at the 65 meter mark. This can be seen in the second graph presented by the IAAF Biomechanics Research paper.
From 80 to 100 meters Bolt actually begins to slow down. We can see that his time for the last 20 meters is 0.05 seconds slower than his fastest 20 meter split of 1.61 seconds. We also know that he reached his maximum speed at 65 meters and everything after that was a little slower.
One last thing to note is that in this race there is a tail wind of 0.9 m/s. This is legal but it does give the athletes a slight advantage as it pushes them along.
To determine how fast we think he can run, lets look back at the Beijing Olympics and remember how analysis of that race suggested that if Bolt had maintained his speed through the last 20 meters and did not begin celebrations, he could possibly have run the 100 meters in 9.55 seconds.

His current world mark is pretty close to that already, so where can he improve to make up the time. So here are some key factors that are critical to determine how much faster he can go.
Firstly look at the table again and at Bolt's reaction time (RT) for his semi-final. In this race he gets out in 0.135 seconds as against the 0.146 seconds in the final. We also see that he completes the first 20 meters in the same time in both the semis and final, while he definitely seemed to be cruising in the semi-final. It has also been suggested that Bolt actually covered the first 20 meters in Beijing faster than he did in Berlin. This is up for debate though, as the video analysis was done using broadcast footage where the camera setup was not optimal. In any case, Bolt can definitely get out of the blocks faster and should be able to cover that first 20 meters faster than he did in Berlin.
The prediction from the Beijing Olympics was based on the suggestion that Bolt could maintain his speed at 80 meters through to the end of the race. In Berlin however, he is not able to do this and slows down a little over the last 20 meters. We also notice that all the athletes in the final ran slower over the last 20 meters, than in the split between 60-80 meters (which was the fastest for all of them). Therefore it may be impossible for a 100 meter athlete to maintain their speed over the last 20 meters and the Beijing prediction may have been optimistic in this regard.
In the last 10 meters in Berlin, Bolt takes a look out of the corner of his eye to check on Gay. We don't believe this could have caused too much of a slow down. In fact if we look at his average velocity at the 90m and the 100m mark from the research, we can see that he does not slow down between those 2 points. But lets assume he could have been 1 or 2 hundredths of a second faster if he had not checked.
The 0.9 m/s tail wind in the final in Berlin will definitely have helped Bolt. A tail wind of up to 2.0 m/s is considered legal for a record to stand. Therefore there is an advantage to be gained with the right conditions.
Finally we have some sort of answer. We think Bolt can definitely run faster. If he improves his reaction time and runs hard through the finish in the right conditions, we have no doubt a new world record will be set.
I am sure we would all love to see an athlete challenge the 9.50 second barrier and Bolt may have it in him to do just that. We look forward to watching it all.

Stainless Steel Bars - Production, Importance, and Uses


Stainless steel bars are a very important part of industrial, factory, and residential building projects. It is important to have an idea in mind with regard to the design you are planning to use the stainless steel bar for. These days, there are many different kinds of uses for these materials such as building shelves for the kitchen, catering equipments, furniture, etc. Stainless steel is made by mixing steel with non-corrosive metals to give it additional properties that will make it more resilient.
Often these stainless steel bars are produced in large numbers of a lot of length, these are fairly easy to transport. However, there are also occasions when they are made according to specifications of length and width that is required by the clients. These bars are made in a refinery and also can be fashioned into shapes as required. This steel is specially manufactured to endure harsh weather and also to last well without easily getting rusted. When making stainless steel, it is mixed with at least 10% of chromium. There may be varied amounts of nitrogen, nickel, molybdenum and other such metals which contribute certain properties that make these bars all the more useful.
Most of the properties, anti-corrosive being on of them, come in iron steel bars due to the presence of chromium metal in them. These bars are made in two ways. They may be hot-finished bars or cold-finished bars. In order to check how well made the material is, a lot of testing is done. The parameters that the material is tested on include yield strength, elongation, tensile strength and Brinell hardness. The bars may also be re-forged later on for other uses.
Due to the presence of chromium in stainless steel bars, they are well protected against oxidation. This is because of the fact that the chromium forms a layer of chromium oxide over the bars making it stronger against scratching, staining, and also resistant to bending easily. It is however also noticed that these properties occur more when these bars occur in environments where oxygen is available in plenty. In undersea environments, at very low depths, the lack of oxygen makes them corrode faster. These bars are made at extremely high temperatures in a blast furnace and it is these temperatures that allow the various metals added to it to mix thoroughly giving us stainless steel.

When at a high temperature, the various metals fuse to form a single alloy of stainless steel Bars which is then fed into another vessel made out of argon. Here, de-carbonization occurs following which casting or forging of the metal begins for use in different areas. Being malleable, it is possible to create stainless steel bars, sheets, rounds and lots more. It is also drawn into stainless steel wires which are highly useful. Steel also has an advantage that it can be fully recycled to be used again at the end of the shelf life. Therefore, there is no wastage as it often fetches a good price at the scrap market after use.

The Role of Titanium Plate in Modern Industries


Titanium is a strong and very durable and is also lighter than ceramic because of the low density and non corrosive property. There are a number of titanium products on today's market, for example: titanium bar, plate, block, and so on.
