Industrial Use of Titanium

Industrial Use of Titanium
Titanium is abbreviated by the symbol Ti and is chemical element with the atomic number 22. The element is found in almost all living things, water bodies, soil and rocks. Physically it has lustrous silvery grey white metallic appearance and chemically it has highly resistance to corrosion as stains and tarnish that makes it a highly demandable product for use in various kinds of industries. Because of its excellent resistant feature and light in weight in comparison to other metals, this element is used in several industries including aerospace, agriculture, medical, consumer and architectural applications.
Titanium is primarily used in aircraft and marine applications because of its high strength and resistant to sea water. Around 65% of its total production is used in marine and aerospace industries however there are other industries also which used it rest of the production. Paper industry, toothpaste and in plastic industry, it is widely used for making white permanent pigment. The production of titanium metal is done in four major steps, firstly its ore is reduced into porous form to form a sponge and then it is melted to form ingot. After that ingot is undergoes primary fabrications and converted into plates, bars, pipes and other industrial mill products and in its final stage, these mill products are converted into finished products shapes and sizes.

Element is widely used for making propeller shafts and rigging due to its high corrosion resistance with sea water. For corrosion resistance, it is also used in the power generation, chemical and pulp/paper industry and marine industry. Many industrial applications use chemicals like hydro chlorite, chlorine dioxide, chlorates and chlorites for corrosion, however corrosion resistance is critical, titanium which is fully resistant is best to use. In addition the element is excellent erosion resistant and has higher heat efficiency with a superior light weight ratio to other metals.
The excellent properties of Titanium include- it is as stronger as steel but has half in weight, it is ductile and easily handled, available in number of formats like sheets, sponges, ingots, pipes and etc., it has low thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity, easily burn in air and in nitrogen presence also, physiologically element is non toxic and has no adverse effect on human's body and highly corrosion and erosion resistant element among others one.

It is well known element for its ability to alloy with other metals that improves its durability, strength and lightness. Because of its bio compatibility, it is also used in medical applications such as surgical implants of sockets and hip ball that can stays for 20 years. And for aircraft industry, titanium 6AL-4V alloy is used that accounts 50% of the alloys like aluminium and vanadium and other metals.
