Copper-Nickel alloy for handling seawater

The copper-nickel alloys are rapidly used for their excellent resistance to biofouling, corrosion over the running and static seawater. The ships and several offshore structures use seawater for quenching operations and different industrial installation like power production and desalination plants are located near the sea to get water for cooling purposes. The seawater piping system are also installed for conveying ballast, tank cleaning water and steam, for emergency fire fighting applications.

Seawater is a complicated mixture, comprising of dissolved salts, suspended abrasive solids, gases dissolved and as bubbles and organic matter and organisms and its composition may vary in composition as per the tide and weather.

In fact on a comparison of installation costs, it may be costlier if, because of the corrosion wastage, it has to be thicker and so heavier than the copper-nickel alloy.
